My First Country Bar Experience (written 05/09/08)
May 14, 2008 by Isis Lee
I went to work today, which was pretty boring and slow. After work though, a few of my girls and I went out for sushi at a Japanese restaurant in Tempe I had never been to before. It was pretty fresh and authentic, and the service was decent. I seriously have a problem eating sushi when it’s made by anyone other than a Japanese chef (c’mon, it’s an art!)…but luckily this place is Japanese owned and run, to the best of my belief.
After dinner, my friend, Jackie, suggested hitting up a club called Graham Central Station, which I had also never been to. She said there were three different dance floors and they played all kinds of music so I agreed to go along, just to check it out. When we got there, there was a van from the local country music station parked out front and a bunch of people wearing cowboy hats! I am not a fan of country music at all and have never been to a country bar in my life so you can imagine the look on my face when we walked up. This is also due to the fact that Jackie never mentioned that when she said “all kinds of music”, she also meant some two-step.
Well, the place was HUGE and pretty packed. Some singer named Kieth Anderson, was performing and I guess he was the reason most people showed up. I have never heard of him in my life. At least, my friend was correct that there were a few different dance floors. One out on the main floor, another in a hip/hop and top 40 room, and one more in an 80s room. We hung out in the hip-hop room for a while since their bar was the least busy. There were cages you could dance in and we spent some time bemusing why only the fattest or oldest chicks that can’t dance always cimb up in them. Later on, when Kieth Anderson started playing, we moved out to the main floor and my friend, Paige took my hand and tried to teach me how to waltz to some country love song. We got a few strange looks, being the only two girls dancing together…and also probably due to the fact that Paige is almost 6 feet tall with her heels on and has long dreads down her back. I bumped into a few people and stepped on her feet a few times, I will admit. It felt a little awkward in there but I still had a great time. I have to say that there is something a little charming also about a country boy with a subtle Texas accent. I talked to a few that night. We mostly hung out as just girls though, and for my first country bar experience, I had a lot of fun. I finally got home a little while ago and I need to get in bed since it’s back to work tomorrow!
I hope everyone is having a good weekend!
