A Near-Traumatic Experience

May 18, 2008 by Isis Lee

Yesterday was pretty much like any other Saturday. Of course, I went to work, which turned out to be slow for a Saturday but okay overall. However, something happened on the way to work that messed with my day a little.

I was driving my normal route, on the freeway right before my work exit, when suddenly I saw a small black dog walk out from the median. He seemed to notice the oncoming traffic though, and jumped back to the median luckily before anything happened. I notice the little dog is a black and tan miniature pinscher that looks just like my dog, Cado. My first instinct is to hit my brakes and pull over in the shoulder lane next to the median where the dog is lying underneath a tree in some shade. He’s panting and looking pretty tired so I don’t even think twice about walking over and calling out to it. However, when the little guy saw me he got scared and ran further away, down the median once again. Then he runs back out onto the freeway! There’s cars approaching quickly, some doing 80mph and I am frozen in fear that this dog is about to get hit and smashed by a car right in front of me! THANK GOD, he turned around once again and darted back to the median. I’m standing barefoot after running through the rocks , trying to get to the dog. I drive barefoot and didn’t pause to put my shoes back on before jumping out of the car. The dog quickly got way ahead of me and continued to walk down the median and goes around a curve so that I can’t see him anymore. Sadly, I knew it was a futile effort and walked back to my car. The oncoming cars continued to move at their normal pace so I assumed the dog hadn’t run out into traffic and could only hope that he would stay on the median or get away from the freeway completely. I am a HUGE sucker for dogs, as you probably know. Plus that little guy looked just like my baby at home so I am pretty shook up after all of this! Time seemed to be moving in slow motion when it happened and I was SOOOOOO afraid that I was about to witness something horrible.  I couldn’t help but start crying as I got to work and I was pretty bad when I finally got there. I felt like such a dumbass when the girls and my manager saw me and I told them what happened. My manager hugged me though and said I didn’t need to be sorry for my sweet heart. It was nice.

Anyways, that was my traumatic story of the day. It was hard not to think about the dog when I was working and I  really, really, really hope he got back home or is at least safe. :-(

I got home last night and gave my dogs big hugs.
